Unique Partnership Commits to Sustainable Wildfire Mitigation

SALEM, Ore. -- On Thursday, May 25, 2000 U.S. Fire Administration Administrator Carrye B. Brown will join Deschutes County Commissioners Linda Swearingen and Dennis Luke, FEMA Regional Director David L. de Courcy and a host of government, business and community leaders to formally sign the Deschutes County Project Impact Memorandum of Agreement at the Great Hall in Sunriver, OR. According to Commissioner Swearingen, Project Impact is all about building disaster resistant communities by forging local stakeholder partnerships, prioritizing hazards, pooling resources, and taking action to reduce the debilitating effects of future disasters.
"Of the natural disasters facing this county, wildfire is by far the most pressing and immediate threat to our citizens, communities and commerce," said Swearingen. "We have assembled over 100 community partners, working together to fight wildfire losses in Central Oregon. Initial priorities will concentrate on wildfire safety, education and mitigation action."
