Deschutes Escalates War Against Wildfire

SALEM, Ore. -- This afternoon, U.S. Fire Administration Administrator Carrye B. Brown joins Deschutes County Commissioners Linda Swearingen and Dennis Luke, FEMA Regional Director David L. de Courcy and a host of community leaders at the Great Hall in Sunriver, OR to formally sign the Deschutes County Project Impact Memorandum of Agreement. Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities is a nation-wide initiative designed to change the way America deals with disasters, through local stakeholder partnerships, pooled resources, and aggressive mitigation. According to de Courcy, it's a concept that has been well received in the Pacific Northwest.
"Our communities are as unique as the natural hazards that threaten them, and local stakeholders are uniquely qualified to prioritize and effectively mitigate those risks," said de Courcy. "Deschutes County faces significant wildfire hazards. This expanded partnership will help leverage resources, broaden their base of support, and raise awareness for wildfire mitigation and prevention."
Administrator Brown agrees. "I am proud to represent the U.S. Fire Administration and FEMA in officially welcoming Deschutes County as our newest Project Impact partner. Community involvement is critical in reducing fire risk. We must enlist the support of fire and emergency services, students, teachers, business leaders, parents, clergy and civic action groups," said Brown. "That's the direction Deschutes County is going, and in a nutshell, that's what Project Impact is all about."
