Valdez Joins Project Impact

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska Division of Emergency Services Director David Liebersbach today announced that Alaska is expanding its partnership in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) efforts to prevent damage and loss of life from natural disasters. The City of Valdez was nominated by Governor Tony Knowles and has been selected by FEMA Director James Lee Witt to join over 250 communities participating in FEMA's nationwide Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities initiative.
"Project Impact is all about forging local stakeholder partnerships, prioritizing hazards, pooling resources and taking action," said Liebersbach. "Valdez has already established strong partnerships through citizen groups, businesses and government leaders, and has repeatedly demonstrated a solid commitment to pre-disaster mitigation and preparedness. They're a 'natural' for Project Impact!"
FEMA Deputy Regional Director Tammy Doherty concurs. "When we discuss wildfire, floods, winter storms or earthquakes, it's with the certainty that they will occur...some time," said Doherty. "In Alaska, Valdez joins Anchorage, Mat-Su Borough and Kenai Peninsula Borough in their commitment to reducing the toll on their citizens from natural disasters."
