SEATTLE, Wash. -- Every year millions of American lives are disrupted by disasters ranging from floods, fire and hurricanes to tornadoes and earthquakes. Much of the heartache and hardship can be reduced by taking effective action to blunt disasters' fury before they strike. The trick is to convert good intentions into effective action, and according to FEMA Deputy Regional Director Tammy Doherty, the Holiday Season is a great time to start.

"Gifts that increase disaster resistance do more than show how much you care," said Doherty. "They can save lives."
