Anchorage, AK --The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set dates for two National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) workshops. Through the NFIP homeowners can purchase low cost flood insurance, which is backed by the federal government. Several communities in Alaska were impacted by the 2002 Spring break-up flooding in April and May and were declared disaster areas by President Bush.
"Year in and year out, flooding is the leading cause of property loss from natural disasters in this country," said Bill Lokey, Federal Coordinating Officer. "But all too often, homeowners learn after the fact that protection against flood loss is not part of their normal insurance protection package." Flood insurance can be purchased through your local insurance agent. The NFIP is sold through private insurance companies and is backed by the federal government.
Two workshops are scheduled for the Fairbanks area. The Agent workshop is designed for insurance agents, risk managers and condominium association board members. The workshop will cover NFIP's coverage, how the NFIP works, mandatory purchase requirements, claims and premiums. The Agent workshop will be held on Wednesday July 17, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
The Lender workshop is designed for insurance loan officers; compliance officers; loan processing, loan servicing, and customer service representatives; appraisers; and lawyers. This workshop will cover the Federally regulated mandatory purchase requirements and provide a working knowledge of the NFIP. The Lender workshop will be Wednesday July 17 2:00- 4:00 p.m.
