Seattle, WA -- Funding for the fiscal year 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has been increased to a total of $360 million, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is sponsoring a series of special workshops across the country to explain the new application process to interested fire department representatives. A Mount Vernon workshop is scheduled 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, at the Mount Vernon Fire Station, 1901 North Laventure Road. Additional workshops are scheduled 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 21 in Spokane at the Spokane Arena, 720 Mallon Avenue and 10:00 a.m. Monday March 4 in Olympia, 100 Eastside Street NE.

The grant workshops are not a prerequisite to receiving information on application procedures, and all fire departments are encouraged to check out the FEMA grant website: www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. Eligible activities continued from last year include Firefighting Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment, Training, Fire Prevention, Fitness and Wellness, and Vehicles. In addition, fire-based EMS has been added as eligible projects for 2002. For more information contact FEMA liaison Doak Mahlik, at (425) 487-4722.
