Anchorage, AK - Federal disaster funds are now available to help homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes in the Alaska Gateway and Copper River Regional Education Attendance Areas (REAA) recover from damages that occurred during the November 3-10 earthquake and aftershocks.
Additionally, help to state and local governments has been expanded to assist these communities rebuild or repair eligible facilities. All areas in Alaska are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
According to Federal Coordinating Officer William Lokey of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), residents and business owners in the Alaska Gateway REAA and Copper River REAA may apply for help through FEMA's toll-free registration number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Alaska Standard Time, seven days a week until further notice. Those with a speech or hearing impairment may call the TTY number 1-800-462-7585.
"Calling FEMA's toll-free registration number is the best way for individuals to apply for a variety of state and federal disaster assistance programs," Lokey said.
The types of programs available to individuals may include FEMA funding for temporary housing and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs; and, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes.
