FLORENCE, Ore. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Federal Coordinating Officer Dolph Diemont will present an Assistance to Firefighters Grant check for $408,438 to Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue at its Main Fire Station located at 2625 Highway 101 Florence, OR on Thursday March 19, 2009, at 1:00 PM. The funds will be used to replace aging analog radios with modern digital radios for Mapleton Fire District, Swisshome-Deadwood Fire District, Western Lane Ambulance District, and Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue.

The Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program is administered cooperatively by two FEMA components: the Grant Programs Directorate and the United States Fire Administration. It is designed to help ensure that our nation's firefighters have the basic tools and resources necessary to safely perform their responsibilities, save lives, and continue to protect all residents from fire.

"Our nation's firefighters are the first responders in almost every emergency," said Dennis Hunsinger, Acting Regional Administrator for FEMA Region 10. "The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program presentation Thursday March 19 represents a major effort by the federal government to ensure that the nation's firefighters continue to have the basic capability they need to do their jobs, improve safety, and save lives."

Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue has been successful in receiving additional FEMA grant awards this year, all focusing on improving emergency communications and interoperability in Western Lane County. The grants include: $83,000 for communication enhancement equipment for both the 911 dispatch center and the Herman Peak Transmitter site; an additional $431,585 to replace the aging communications tower on Herman Peak with a new 180 foot free standing radio tower, construct a new communications equipment building and purchase an emergency generator. The new tower project will enhance communications for the Florence Police Department, Western Lane Ambulance District, Confederated Tribes Police Department, Mapleton Fire District, Swisshome-Deadwood Fire District, and Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue.

FEMA leads and supports the nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the nation from all hazards including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters.
