WINDSOR, Conn. -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) serving Torrington and Litchfield County is again extending its operation period. The Torrington DRC is now scheduled to be open through 6 p.m. Friday, July 20, at 111 Water Street. This recovery center provides a location where individuals affected by the mid-April storm can talk face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists.

"We are providing space in the fire station to FEMA, SBA and our partners at DEMHS so they will have a more comfortable place to work and assist the increased number of Litchfield County residents seeking help,"said Torrington Fire Chief John Field.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) jointly operate DRCs. Representatives from local, state and federal agencies staff the Torrington facility, and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) provides staff to help with the disaster loan application process.

"The activity in Torrington has been fast and furious,"Governor M. Jodi Rell said.  "Many people have been coming to the fire station and getting their questions answered, but we want to make certain that everyone in Torrington and throughout Litchfield County is able to get the help they need.  FEMA has done a great job in getting the word out, and we appreciate the fire department's tremendous cooperation."

Before visiting any DRC, those with damages and losses in the seven declared counties are urged to apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Hearing- and speech-impaired residents may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Operators are standing by at both numbers between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. seven days a week. Individuals can also register for assistance online at www.fema.gov. An application can also be made at the DRC (see list on page two).

Anyone with questions about disaster loans can visit the SBA in the Disaster Recovery Center or call the SBA Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955. Online information: www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.
