DANBURY, Conn. -- Federal disaster funds have been made available to help state and local government agencies and certain qualifying nonprofit organizations in Fairfield and Hartford counties recover from the effects of Tropical Storm Floyd, it was announced today.

"This means they are now eligible to apply for federal aid to fund 75 percent of the costs of debris removal and the repair or replacement of their storm-damaged public facilities," Federal Coordinating Officer Sharon L. Stoffel said.

Such facilities include buildings, utilities, roads and bridges, water control facilities and recreational facilities.

"We are pleased that FEMA is providing public assistance funding so local governments can continue with their recovery," State Coordinating Officer John T. Wiltse said.

Public assistance briefings will be held later this week to explain the application process in detail to state and local government officials and representatives.
