Almost $1.2 Million in State, FEMA, SBA Disaster Aid Approved for Connecticut To Date

DANBURY, Conn. -- Federal, state and local officials have worked together for the past month with the shared goal of helping Connecticut recover from the high winds, heavy rains and flooding brought by Tropical Storm Floyd.
"Since the September 23 declaration," Federal Coordinating Officer Sharon L. Stoffel said, " $1,165,473 in disaster assistance has been approved to help state residents and business owners in Fairfield, Hartford and Litchfield counties in their recovery."
"In addition, federal Public Assistance disaster funds were made available on October 18 to municipalities and eligible non-profit organizations in Fairfield and Hartford counties," State Coordinating Officer John T. Wiltse said.
A breakdown of Individual Assistance and Public Assistance facts and figures follows:
Individual Assistance (Fairfield, Hartford, and Litchfield counties)
- 667 Connecticut residents and business owners have registered for various local, state and federal programs.
- 297 disaster housing assistance checks totaling $528,092 have been approved to help residents pay for either temporary housing or minimal repairs that would make their homes livable.
- 39 low-interest disaster loans have been approved through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for a total of $557,300. The loans cover residential and business losses.
- 40 checks have been approved for $80,081 through the Individual and Family Grant program to assist people with storm-related losses who do not qualify for SBA loans. The grants provide for serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs.
- 424 housing inspections to verify losses of those who registered for assistance have been completed.
- 302 applicants visited Disaster Recovery Centers in Plainville and Danbury to obtain personalized help and information about available programs. Both centers are now closed.
- Residents and business owners who have not yet registered for assistance have until November 22 to do so by calling 1-800-462-9029, 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the speech and hearing impaired. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.
Public Assistance (Fairfield and Hartford counties)
- Declaration was amended on October 18 to include Public Assistance funding. State and local agencies and eligible nonprofit organizations in the two counties may now apply for federal aid to fund 75 percent of their storm-related costs for emergency services, debris removal and repair or replacement of damaged public facilities.
- Applicant Briefings were held in the two counties on October 20 to explain the Public Assistance application procedure to local/state officials and eligible non-profit organizations.
- 17 Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs) have been received thus far from local/state government agencies, indicating their interest to apply for public assistance funding and the types of damage in their jurisdictions.
- Application for these funds must be made to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the State Office of Policy and Management (OPM) by November 17, 1999.
