FEMA Releases More Than $750,000 to Massachusetts Port Authority

Portsmouth, Mass. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today it would reimburse the Massachusetts Port Authority for costs incurred as a direct result of the record snowstorm that struck the Commonwealth in early December.
The $750,000 Public Assistance grant reimburses the Massachusetts Port Authority for snow removal costs incurred at eight locations in Middlesex and Suffolk counties. The federal payment represents 75 percent of eligible costs. The remaining 25 percent represents the non-federal share.
"These funds represent our ongoing commitment to support the Commonwealth's efforts to recover after an emergency," James N. Russo, Federal Coordinating Officer, said. "To date FEMA has obligated $34.2 million to 659 applicants in Massachusetts."
The Public Assistance program is administered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Eligible emergency related costs are reimbursed to state and local governments and certain non-profit organizations that provide essential governmental services.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
