Improving Academic Performance among American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian Students: Assessment of Learning and Identification of Learning Disabilities
On March 16-18, 2005, several federal agencies, professional organizations, and associations joined forces to hold a national colloquium to address the educational needs of Native American students. Researchers and educational

Adult and Family Literacy: Current Research and Future Directions: A Workshop Summary
The NICHD convened a panel of experts from various disciplines to assess the current state of knowledge about effective approaches to improving the literacy skills of low-literate adults and about the role of family literacy services in providing parents with the knowledge and skills they need to support their children's literacy development as well as their own.

National Symposium on Learning Disabilities in English Language Learners (ELL)
The NICHD and two other federal agencies jointly organized a National Symposium on Learning Disabilities in English Language Learners, October 14-15, 2003, with the goal of determining how best to apply knowledge about identifying and assessing learning disabilities in native English-speaking students to the identification and assessment of learning disabilities in ELL students. In addition, symposium participants discussed ways to distinguish between actual learning disabilities and the challenges associated with learning a new language.

Emergent and Early Literacy Workshop: Current Status and Research Directions
This workshop sought to bring together researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and university educators to consider the current state of knowledge about emergent and early literacy learning in all young children, including those with disabilities and other literacy learning risks. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the gaps in current knowledge and to inform the national direction of literacy research and practice.
