Gambelia copei - Baja California Leopard Lizard

Scientific name: Gambelia copei

Common name: Baja California Leopard Lizard

Size: 3.25-5.6 in (8-14 cm)

Distinguishing characters: Large, robust species with smoky grey background and darker grey or black dorsal spots, edged in lighter shade; dorsal pattern appears mottled or occelated; light crossbars on dorsum; light grey or white venter; small granular scales; large head distinct from neck, lining of mouth and throat purplish-black.

Juveniles: Similar to adults, more distinct banding across dorsum.

Dimorphism: Female develops red-orange blotches on ventral side during breeding season. Male has femoral pores.

Similar species: Gambelia wislizenii: Much lighter background coloration; north from northern San Diego County. Sceloporus occidentalis, Sceloporus orcutti: Have large keeled, pointed dorsal scales. Uta stansburiana: Has bluish-black blotches on sides of chest; lacks occelated dorsal pattern, much smaller.

Additional notes: Uncommon. Powerful runner; bipedal. Adults can inflict painful bite. Prefers chaparral habitats with open understory.
