Santa Fe, NM -- Hikers in the burned area of Santa Fe National Forest who find archeological sites or items such as pottery and stone tools revealed by the fire are asked to look but not touch.
"This is the best way to protect New Mexico's heritage," said Jan Biella, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, with the State Historic Preservation Division (HPD).
Federal forestry officials advise that Santa Fe National Forest has been closed to public access by the Espanola Ranger District.
In the City of Los Alamos are sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties which may have been affected by the fire. Included are sites around Fuller Lodge, Ashley Pond, Bathtub Row, the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Historic District, Los Alamos Ranch School, and the Los Alamos County Historical Museum. The Mesa Public Library and the Canyon Bridge also are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, there are other potentially eligible structures in Los Alamos that may have sustained damage from the fire.
The New Mexico HPD stands ready to provide technical assistance with disaster recovery for structures associated with those sites, Biella said. Property owners intersted in combining building rehabilitation with preservation standards should contact Nancy Hanks at the HPD at 505-827-7411.
