DENTON, Texas -- Hurricane Bret victims in South Texas have until 6 p.m. Thursday Oct. 21 to apply for disaster-recovery assistance. So far, more than 15,000 have called the toll-free registration number, 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585 for individuals with speech or hearing impairments.)

Residents and business owners in 13 South Texas counties are eligible to apply for federal assistance that can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses.

Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration also are available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance. The counties are Aransas, Brooks, Cameron, Duval, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Nueces, San Patricio, Webb and Willacy.

More than $10,074,000 in grants and loans has been approved to date for Hurricane Bret.

Applicants may call between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and speak with a multilingual intake specialist.
