Scientific name: Apalone spinifera
Common name: Spiny Softshell Turtle
Size: 5-18 in (12-45 cm)
INTRODUCED: Native to central U.S.
Distinguishing characters: Extremely flattened turtle with leathery skin covering a soft, flexible shell; fleshy lips and flexible proboscis; limbs are under shell and toes are very webbed; looks like a pancake with legs.
Juveniles: Shell with black spots; dark mottling on head.
Dimorphism: Male has thick tail extending beyond carapace; female is blotched and mottled.
Similar species: None, as no other turtle in California is flattened in this way, or has a leathery shell.
Additional notes: Associated with permanent riparian systems, particularly artificial lakes in southern California; also in the Santa Ana River.
