Release Date: July 5, 2007
Release Number: R4-07-111

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Columbia County and Lake City, Fla., residents can review revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMS) from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, at an open house at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. The new flood risk maps are updated through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Map Modernization Program.

Residents, business owners, developers and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the open house to get information on their flooding risk, flood insurance and engineering results. No formal presentations will be made during the meeting, so the public may visit at any time during the five-hour event. Information booths will be set-up with tables staffed by FEMA, the Suwannee River Water Management District, Columbia County and Lake City.

"This is a great opportunity for Columbia County residents to review the revised flood risk maps. They will provide first-hand information about their risk of flooding, enabling them to make informed insurance and building choices," said FEMA Region IV Administrator Phil May.

The new flood risk maps have been in production for nearly two years. The project is a cooperative effort among FEMA, the Suwannee River Water Management District, Columbia County and Lake City and is part of FEMA's plan to modernize all flood maps nationwide.

Directions: from I-75 Northbound, take Exit # 427 East (right) onto US-90. At the fourth red light (K-Mart Shopping Center), turn right onto SR-247 (Branford Highway). Take the first right onto Mary Ethel Lane (about ¼ mile). The open house will be held in the Entertainment Building at the Columbia County Fairgrounds.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
