State and Federal Assistance in Georgia Exceeds $17 Million

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Nearly four months have passed since tornadoes and severe storms tore through Georgia in early March. Since then, nearly $17.7 million in disaster aid has been approved, according to officials of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).

The total in federal disaster aid includes more than $1.2 million in FEMA assistance for individuals and households and more than $9.5 million in low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for homeowners, renters and businesses. This individual assistance was approved for nine counties: Baker, Crawford, Dougherty, McDuffie, Mitchell, Sumter, Taylor, Warren, and Worth.

Also, GEMA's and FEMA's Public Assistance Program has obligated nearly $6.8 million to communities and counties for debris removal, disaster-related emergency services and repair or reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, with additional funding being approved weekly. Public Assistance was approved for 13 counties: Baker, Clay, Crawford, Hancock, McDuffie, Mitchell, Muscogee, Stewart, Sumter, Taylor, Warren, Webster, and Wilkinson.

FEMA's temporary housing assistance and grants for medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
