BILOXI, Miss. -- Officials from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will begin the relocation of FEMA housing occupants at Dedeaux Square/Penny Lane Park.
Following a meeting held this morning, FEMA informed the park owners that FEMA will immediately begin relocating housing occupants from the property until all FEMA-leased pads are empty and the lease is terminated. The meeting was held between FEMA officials and Dedeaux Square/Penny Lane representatives to discuss the park owners' refusal to provide park management.
FEMA will send a manager to oversee park operations and site deactivation during the day until all FEMA units are removed. Due to public concern about crime in the area and at the mayor's request, FEMA also has added security officers. The deactivation of the site will be accomplished over a period of time. FEMA will attempt to deactivate all mobile home units located in the park within 120 days, depending on the availability of other vacant sites.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
