Mississippi Disaster Recovery Aid Tops $12.8 Million

Tupelo, MS -- With the deadline for registering for disaster recovery assistance approaching, state and federal officials have already approved more than $12.8 million to Mississippians who suffered damages in the February and March windstorms and tornadoes.
The deadline for applying for individual assistance is April 24th, and everyone in Mississippi's fifty disaster-declared counties is urged to register now. The only way to apply for disaster help is to call the Federal Emergency Management Agency's toll-free teleregistration number, 1-800-462-9029. Persons with speech or hearing impairments should call 1-800-462-7585.
"We don't want to miss any individuals who need help in putting their lives back together in the wake of these storms," said Federal Coordinating Officer John Hannah. "So far, 5,755 persons have applied for assistance."
Leon Shaifer, the state official in charge of the recovery efforts, said, "There are state and federal programs tailored to help all who suffered damages in the storms, and we want to provide assistance to those who deserve it."
Here are the latest recovery program totals:
- $1.5 million for housing assistance for 1,481 applicants.
- $1.6 million in grants to 609 individuals and families for necessities.
- $3.6 million for debris removal, emergency safety measures and repair of damaged public infrastructure.
- $102,678 in the Crisis Counseling Immediate Services Program.
- $6 million in U. S. Small Business Administration loans to homeowners and businesses incurring uninsured losses.
