Greeneville, TN -- A toll-free Disaster Information Helpline - 1-800-525-0321(1-800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired) - has been established for those who were affected by the recent severe storms and flooding and who have already registered for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Helpline provides a means for applicants to maintain up-to-date registration information (correct address, phone numbers, etc.), to ask questions about what assistance programs are available or to inquire about the status of an application.

John D. White Jr., state coordinating officer, reminded residents that the first step to receiving assistance is to call the toll-free registration number, 1-800-462-9029or 1-800-462-7585for the hearing impaired. He said, "First, you register by calling the registration number, and then for further questions regarding assistance programs or the status of your application, you call the Helpline."

President Bush signed a major disaster declaration following the storms and flooding during the July 27 through August 22, 2001, period for seven Tennessee counties making them eligible for federal disaster assistance. The declared counties are: Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Shelby, Unicoi and Washington, Gracia Szczech, the federal official in charge of long-term recovery, said, "Those who have already registered with FEMA should use the Helpline to update their application information such as changes in address or phone number, or to get additional information about the status of their application. If the Helpline is unable to answer a particular question, you will be referred to the appropriate agency or organization."

Representatives from FEMA and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) are encouraging anyone located in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Johnson, Shelby, Unicoi or Washington counties who sustained uninsured or underinsured damage resulting from the July 27 through August 22, 2001 severe storms and flooding not to delay in registering for assistance. There are several disaster assistance programs available to those affected by the recent storms and flooding.
