New York, NY -- The deadline for New Jerseyans affected by the Sept. 11th World Trade Center attack for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) has been extended until November 16, disaster recovery officials said.
"There is still a need for DUA," said Peter Martinasco, coordinating officer- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "People are still coming to terms with the economic effects of this tragedy, and we want to give them every opportunity to get the help they need."
"Many people who apply for regular unemployment assistance will receive benefits under that program," said Lt. Edward O'Neil, state coordinating officer-New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (OEM). "But there are people who wouldn't ordinarily be eligible for unemployment who will need the help offered through DUA."
The DUA program extends coverage to the self-employed, business owners, workers who lost employment as a direct result of the disaster, and those who are otherwise not eligible for New Jersey unemployment program benefits.
To apply for regular unemployment insurance or for DUA, New Jersey residents should call the New York State Department of Labor "Telephone Claims Line" at 1-888-209-8124. Lines are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Applicants should have their Social Security numbers as well as their earnings and employment history available when they call.
