New York, NY -- The hours of operation for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration and Helpline numbers will change starting Monday, Nov. 26.

People affected by the World Trade Center attack can apply for assistance by calling the toll-free registration line at 1-800-462-9029(TTY:1-800-462-7585). If you have applied to FEMA for assistance, you can check on the status of your application by calling the Helpline at 1-800-525-0321(TTY: 1-800-462-7585). Both lines are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. All operators have access to translation services to accommodate the many language communities in the New York City area.

The application process is the starting point for a wide range of federal, state and voluntary disaster assistance programs and services, including temporary housing and relocation; unemployment benefits; crisis counseling; low-interest loans for businesses, renters and home owners; legal and insurance issues; mortgage and rental assistance; and more.

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, both the registration and Helpline numbers and the Disaster Assistance Service Centers (DASCs) in Manhattan will be closed. The DASCs on 141 Worth St. in lower Manhattan and at Pier 94 at 12th Avenue and 50th Street in midtown will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22. Both the centers and the phone lines will resume operation on Friday, Nov. 23.

Visitors to the DASCs can meet one-on-one with program representatives who will evaluate their individual needs, check on the status of their application or update their registration information. The DASCs are staffed by many agencies including FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the state's Department of Labor, the city's Human Resources Administration, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Safe Horizon. The centers will provide professional childcare for applicants during their visits. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Pier 94 DASC. The 141 Worth St. DASC is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both locations are open Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
