Towns and Cities

These residential areas normally comprise several distinct ecological elements, many of which are commonly interspersed throughout the greater part of the community. Typical habitat niches include the following: office buildings, stores, and other commerical buildings; resident homes and apartment buildings; garages and sheds; landscaped lawns, parks and golf courses with planting of ornamental trees and shrubs; garden plots; and paved and gravelled driveways and streets.

Characteristic Breeding Birds

Primary intraneous species:

Mourning Dove, Western Kingbird, Purple Martin (local), House Wren, Brown Thrasher, American Robin, House Sparrow, Common Grackle, Chipping Sparrow. Secondary intraneous species (including well-marked subspecies):

Common Nighthawk, Chimney Swift (local), Yellow-shafted Flicker, Eastern Kingbird, Blue Jay, Gray Catbird, Eastern Bluebird (local), Cedar Waxwing, Starling, Warbling Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Brown-headed Cowbird, Baltimore Oriole (local), Orchard Oriole, American Goldfinch, Song Sparrow. In addition, semiferal populations of the Rock Dove (barn pigeon) are often present. Extraneous species:

includes many characteristic species of grassland, cropland, and woodland habitats that occur adjacent to residential areas of towns and cities.
