Service Biologist Receives Award for Work on Athos Oil Spill Restoration Date Posted: April 6, 2009 Sherry Krest from the Chesapeake Bay Field Office received the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) General Counsel Award for her work on the Athos Oil Spill Restoration Team. Each year the NOAA Office of the General Counsel recognizes attorneys, support staff, line and staff office personal and other Federal Agency employees for their exceptional performance and contributions to the NOAA office of the General Counsel. During the spill Sherry organized survey teams to collect data on oiled birds, met with the responsible party and their contractors, and worked closely with response personnel and co-Trustees (NOAA, and the states of PA, DE, and NJ), as well as with Service personnel from refuges and other ES Offices. A key component and very important part of Sherryﾒs work included the scoping and development of the John Heinz Restoration Project. This particular project involved the return of tidal exchange to a 56 acre dredge spoil facility on the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia. The plan calls for the excavation of a series of channels and pools and placing the spoil adjacent to the pools to form saturated scrub/shrub wetlands. Other federal agencies represented on the award winning team are NOAA, the U.S. Coast Guard and Dept. of Justice. The team received their award on March 11, 2009 in the NOAA Silver Spring Auditorium in Silver Spring, Maryland.
