Lenexa, KS - Residents and businesses that suffered damage from the tornadoes and storms beginning May 4 and continuing and have called the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) registration number (1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585) may have received a loan application from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

State and federal officials urge recipients to complete the application and return it promptly. The application is the key for entry to several assistance programs offered by the State of Kansas, FEMA and the SBA. Don't delay completing and returning the application; it may hamper access to recovery programs.

"There is help available for those who need it," said Raymond Chatham, SBA Area 3 Director. "For a quick response, it is important to return the complete application as soon as possible."

These loans are offered at an interest rate less than 3.0% and for terms of up to 30 years. Returning the SBA loan packet does not obligate an applicant to accept a loan but is a necessary step to being considered for other forms of disaster assistance.

"If the SBA determines you can't afford a loan, you may be considered for a grant through the Individuals and Households Program (IHP)," said Mike Hall, Federal Coordinating Officer for FEMA. "These grants can help those affected by the disaster meet serious disaster-related needs not covered by other programs."

The federal disaster declaration covers the counties of Anderson, Douglas, Cherokee, Crawford, Haskell, Labette, Leavenworth, Meade, Miami, Neosho, Osage, Seward, Woodson, and Wyandotte.

Residents with damage from the May storms should register via FEMA's toll-free number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362); for the hearing- or speech-impaired, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.
