Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- Iowa disaster victims who have not yet applied for federal disaster assistance have only one more week to apply. Monday, August 19, 2002 is the last day to file applications for most disaster assistance programs, according to federal and state disaster recovery officials.

State Coordinating Officer Steve Zimmerman is encouraging homeowners, renters, farmers, and businesses owners who sustained damage from flooding between June 3 and 25, to apply by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Those with hearing or speech impairments can register by calling 1-800-462-7585. The telephone numbers are operational from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.

Applicants may qualify for assistance under several federal and state programs such as disaster housing assistance, grants to meet disaster-related needs, U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loans. SBA loan applications must be completed and returned to the SBA by August 18, 2002. Businesses applying to the SBA for Economic Injury Disaster Loans have until March 19, 2003 to apply.
