Kansas City, Mo. --Team members study scenarios and devise strategies for deploying from a mock Base of Operations during Rapid Needs Assessment training.
In the event of a catastrophic disaster, the effected state may request a Rapid Needs Assessment Team to deploy to the site and provide the state and the FEMA regional office information about immediate needs, such as life-threatening situations and imminent hazards. Each team is small, usually six to eight members, and is self-sufficient to allow local and state resources to be devoted to the victims. Members include state emergency management staff, and representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, American Red Cross, Environmental Protection Agency, Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces, U.S. Public Health Service, and FEMA staff.
The exercise, held August 5-8 in Kansas City, provided team members the opportunity to practice and anticipate needs in a non-critical environment.
