Lost Power During Ice Storm? Call The Disaster Registration Line

Emporia, Kan. -- State and federal officials urge Kansas residents who lost power or had damage done to their meter boxes or electrical wires during the severe ice storms that began Jan 29, to call the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and register for disaster assistance. The deadline to register is April 8, 2002.
"If your electrical service was interrupted or had electrical wires pulled from your house during this winter's ice storms, we encourage you to call the disaster registration line," said Carlos Mitchell, federal coordinating officer. "There could be unseen damage to your electrical system which could cause future electrical problems," said Mitchell.
"We want to remind residents who were affected by the ice storms that they only have until April 8 to register for state and federal assistance," said Chuck Bredahl, state coordinating officer.
Residents can register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Anyone with questions about assistance programs or the status of their applications may call the same number. Those who are hearing or speech-impaired can call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. The lines are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
