Severe thunderstorms developed
across central Illinois the afternoon of June 13, continuing through
the evening. Areas along and south of a Macomb to Bloomington
line were most affected by these storms. After the initial
storms exited the state in the mid to late evening hours, more
developed in western Illinois late in the evening, crossing the state
through the night.

The national weather map at 7 am
CDT showed a strong low pressure center across Nebraska. This
was forecast to move northeast toward the upper Great Lakes region,
with warm and unstable air over much of the Midwest. The main
question was whether cloudiness from overnight storms across Missouri
would hamper the development of severe weather. |

The two graphics at the left show
the probabilities of wind damage (top) and large hail (bottom), as
indicated in the Storm Prediction Center's forecast for Day 1 (in this
case, 11:30 AM Monday through 7 AM Tuesday). In the top
graphic, the hatched area indicates a 10% or greater probability of
wind speeds of 75 mph or greater. The hatched region in the
lower graphic indicates a 10% or greater probability of hail of at
least 2 inches in diameter. |

The Lincoln radar
image at 3:12 PM showed all was quiet over the immediate central
Illinois area. Strong to severe thunderstorms had developed
across south central Illinois, between St. Louis and Vandalia. |

At 4:04 PM, radar
showed a supercell thunderstorm developing over west central Illinois,
between Quincy and Macomb. This thunderstorm would produce half
dollar size hail in Huntsville, in Schuyler County, around 4:15 PM. |

A little over an hour
later (5:08 PM), the thunderstorm in west central Illinois had moved
into Fulton County, where hail of half dollar to golfball-size was
reported around Lewistown, breaking windows in several vehicles.
Further south, strong to severe thunderstorms were increasing in areas
between Quincy and St. Louis, with a supercell thunderstorm west of
Carlinville. |

The radar image at 6
PM showed severe thunderstorms in a line from Jacksonville south to
St. Louis. Several trees were damaged or brought down across
Scott and Morgan Counties |

At 6:09 PM, the storms
were beginning to move into Sangamon County. Notice the S-shape
in the radar echoes west of Springfield. This can indicate the
potential for strong winds. |

Around 6:30 PM, the
storms were moving through the Springfield area, causing extensive
damage to trees and power lines in Chatham, Springfield, and
Rochester. |

At 7:08 PM, the storms
were moving through the heart of De Witt, Macon, and Christian
Counties. The strong winds continued, causing several buildings
in Latham to lose their roof, as well as one in Decatur; damage to a
grain bin in Hallsville; and extensive tree and power line damage.
Measured wind gusts around this time included 59 mph 7 miles northeast
of Lincoln (6:55 PM), 70 mph at Elwin at 7 PM, and 58 mph at the
Decatur Airport at 7:06 PM. |

At 7:48 PM, radar
showed the squall line pushing across eastern and south central
Illinois. A measured wind gust of 65 mph was reported 2 miles
east of Urbana at this time. |

At 9:37 PM, the
original squall line had mostly pushed into Indiana, but strong storms
were still occurring between Effingham and Terre Haute.
Meanwhile, the next batch of strong to severe storms was beginning to
develop north of St. Louis. |

This radar image at
10:43 PM showed a bow echo (a line of thunderstorms bulging in the
middle) moving across Macoupin and Sangamon Counties. |

By midnight, strong to
severe thunderstorms were again in a crooked line from Decatur to St.
Louis. |

Some much-needed
rainfall occurred across portions of central Illinois. The
highest amounts were mainly south of I-72, especially from Alton
northeast through Decatur to near Champaign. The top image shows
the radar estimated rainfall as of about 5 AM Tuesday morning.
The radar estimated about 2.5 to 4 inches of rain in these areas
(yellow to orange shading). Radar totals can occasionally be
overestimated due to the occurrence of hail; the bottom image shows
specific rainfall observations about a half inch lower than the radar
estimate. The path of the supercell that
caused the large hail in west central Illinois is also visible in the
radar estimated rainfall image, indicated by the dark blue line from
Quincy to Peoria. |
