More Than $2.8m In Federal Disaster Assistance To Missourians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Disaster assistance in grants and loans to homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage from the severe storms and flooding in Missouri May 5-18 totals more than $2.8 million.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the following is the recovery services summary as of 7 a.m., Friday, Aug. 3, 2007:
- 811 residents have applied for individual assistance through the FEMA toll free registration number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 1-800-462-7585, or online at www.fema.gov.
- 463 registrations have been approved for assistance.
- 99 percent of damage inspections issued have been completed.
- The majority of inspections are being completed within 2 days of registration.
- More than $1,859,502 has been disbursed to the victims from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) Individuals and Households Program.
- More than $986,000 in disaster loans have been approved for individuals and businesses by the Small Business Administration (SBA).
- The FEMA/State registration deadline and the SBA deadline for physical disaster loan applications for all declared counties is Aug. 10, 2007.
- There have been 246 visits to the 10 Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) locations established to serve those impacted by the storms. The DRC at the Lathrop Community Center, 406 Elm St., Lathrop, remains open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Aug. 10.
- To date, FEMA Community Relations representatives going door-to-door have visited more than 2,771 homes, 354 businesses, 1,121 churches, 57 post offices, 38 community based organizations and 243 county/city emergency managers, mayors, commissioners, sheriffs and local officials to explain FEMA disaster assistance programs, promote visits to Disaster Recovery Centers and stress the importance of returning the SBA applications for low-interest disaster loans.
Residents who have already registered for assistance may call the 1-800 number to check on the progress of their application or ask questions. Application status may also be checked at fema.gov.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
