The course brought together FEMA, State and local emergency managers and Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals to take part in an intensive training session on the preparation and use of map-based HAZUS-MH templates or hurricane impact assessments and response operations.  The training was guided by four objectives: 1) to improve participants' understanding of HAZUS-MH, including the limitations and uncertainties of the model; 2) to identify and prioritize HAZUS-MH map-based "templates" that can be used to support hurricane disaster operations; 3) to train participants on procedures for preparing the templates; and 4) to incorporate HAZUS-MH analyses into briefings and Incident Action Plans.

The training was organized into two phases - use of HAZUS-MH for pre-landfall analysis and decision-making, and the use of HAZUS-MH for post-landfall analysis of damage and loss. The following HAZUS-MH templates were prepared for that show:

One breakout group included officials from FEMA's Individual Assistance (IA) Program, who focused on potential applications of HAZUS-MH Hurricane Model to support the IA mission during the 2008 hurricane season.

FEMA will continue to refine the HAZUS-MH templates and standard operating procedures for using the analysis in ongoing preparations for the 2008 hurricane season.
