BISMARCK, N.D. -- North Dakota residents who were affected by severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, and ground saturation from March 1 to July 19 have until October 1 to register for federal and state disaster assistance.

Those who suffered damage and have not yet registered should call the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration line at 1-800-462-9029, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. (TTY: 1-800-462-7585, for the speech- or hearing- impaired)

Assistance programs available include: disaster housing assistance, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans, and grants to meet disaster-related needs unmet by other assistance programs. Individuals who register with FEMA and receive a SBA application need to also file that application with SBA by the October 1 deadline.

In light of disasters occurring in other parts of country, people should know disaster assistance to one state does not come at the expense of another. It is important that North Dakotans not rule themselves out for assistance because they feel someone else may need it more.

For answers to questions about disaster assistance programs or to update an application, call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321. (TTY: 1-800-462-7585) For information about SBA programs, call 1-800-366-6303.
