The Surface and Materials Science group (formerly Physical Electronics or PEL), is an R&D and service group in the Operations Directorate, pursues a vigorous research program in support of accelerator, ultra-high vacuum, and materials development while providing materials qualification and materials failure analysis support for SLAC.
Our research programs include high-polarization high-current electron sources, processes/coatings for the suppression of collective electron effects, surface physics of niobium for the ILC, and extreme electric field breakdown in accelerating structures.
