Makeshift school bell from World War II on Saipan. "This bell was
given to me by Bishop Tomas Camacho of Our Lady Of Mount Carmel
Cathedral, June 1994. It came from the site of the Japanese sugar
mill, where we landed June 15, 1944 (after the battle that site
was rebuilt as the Catholic cathedral and school). The makeshift
bell is made from a US Navy oxygen tank. It was used as a school
bell at the cathedral. I built the frame from American Red Oak.
My wife helped me design the oriental motif."

of Saipan, a celebration was held to honor those who participated
in that event. Over 150 World War II veterans traveled to Saipan
for this observance, which included ceremonies, tours, parades,
and dedication of the Court of Honor and Flag Circle at American
