Plate 23. Semipermanent pond, subsaline, cover type 2 (IV-E-2). Deep-marsh zone represented by open-water phase, drawdown bare-soil phase, and emergent vegetation composed entirely of alkali bulrush (Scirpus paludosus). Adjoining, light-colored band of shallow-marsh emergent vegetation is composed of alkaligrass (Puccinellia nuttalliana). July 24, 1964, Stutsman Couny, N. Dak.
