The Fisheries Assessment Branch conducts fishery stock assessments,
participates in stock assessment reviews, and assesses the impacts of
regulatory proposals made by the South Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and
Caribbean Fishery Management Councils, and the International Council for
the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
Scientists also conduct studies of highly migratory species (tunas, sharks, and
swordfish) and operate an observer program to obtain catch and effort and
biological information from the U.S. large-pelagic longline fleet.
