National Park Week - April 18-26, 2009

Tour Clara Barton's Home - April 18-26 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., every hour on the hour

From her Civil War work to the founding of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton dedicated her life to the relief of suffering. She was the driving force of the American Red Cross for 23 years. Her early leadership gave the organization a solid reputation that garnered support and trust. Her influence led to the creation of programs that continue to benefit and support families in need today. Take a 45-minute tour of this unusual structure and learn about this remarkable person. Groups of 10 or more people must make reservations for house tours and other special programs. Free!

Junior Ranger Day & Spring Open House - May 2, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

During this event, children between the ages of 7-12 can earn a certificate and badge and become Junior Rangers at Clara Barton National Historic Site and/or adjacent Glen Echo Park by completing an activity book. In addition, adults and families will be regaled by tales of Clara Barton’s courage, vision, and leadership during a visit to her home, warehouse, and the Headquarters of the American Red Cross. This event is being held on May 2 in conjunction with Family Day at Glen Echo Park. For additional information about ranger-led tours of Glen Echo Park on May 2 or other dates, please contact the National Park Service at 301-320-1400 or visit www.nps.gov/glec. To learn more about additional Family Day activities, including carousel rides, please contact the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Inc. at 301-634-2222. 

Parking for both Clara Barton National Historic Site and Glen Echo Park is located at 5801 Oxford Road in Glen Echo, Maryland. Free National Park Service events. Carousel rides: $1.25 each. 

Junior Ranger Camps - July 7-8, 14-15, 28-29 or August 4-5 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

These two-day camps, designed for designed for children ages 9-12, will make history come alive with fun-filled learning activities related to Clara Barton's life, the history of Glen Echo Park, and the National Park Service mission. Openings are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 301-320-1410 for required reservations. Free!

 

 
 

Key Information

Clara Barton's Glen Echo, Maryland home was a place of service. It was her house, but she used it as headquarters, warehouse and living quarters for the American Red Cross. Everything about the place conveyed Clara Barton's sense of duty, commitment and dedication to serving others.

House shown by guided tour only.

Tours start on the hour: 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, Noon, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

Groups of ten people or more need reservations. Please call 301-320-1410 for more information or to schedule a reservation.

Open daily, all year - except closed on Thanksgiving Day, December 25 and January 1.

Free.

After camping in Misty Mount for 1 season (1937), the Maryland League for Crippled Children moved to Camp Greentop, one of the earliest camps in the nation designed specifically for people with disabilities. Renamed The League for People with Disabilities they continue to camp in Greentop today.
