NMFS Announces Pending RevisionsTo Reporting Areas

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announces pending revisions to the descriptions of Gulf of Alaska (GOA) Statistical and Reporting areas 620 and 630, as described in Figure 3b to part 679, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

The revisions to these area descriptions will be codified soon in regulations. Participants are encouraged to use these revised codes prior to codification to ensure consistency of codes in the database for 2004.

In the GOA, the entire Alitak Bay/Olga Bay/Deadman's Bay/Portage Bay complex of Kodiak Island is to be reported as area 620. A revised Figure 3b of 50 CFR Part 679 is currently posted on Alaska Region's home page at http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/infobulletins/2004/Figure_3b.pdf showing the pending revisions. Except Olga Bay, the revisions to this figure were presented in a proposed rule which can be found at http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/prules/fr62423.pdf. In the final rule, the Olga Bay will be added to the complex to be reported as 620 because a tiny, eastern area of Olga Bay also occurs in 630. Historically, no groundfish fishing has occurred in the shallow waters of this area.

Alitak, Olga, Deadman's, and Portage Bay Complex and the Boundary Between Management Areas 620 and 630. (Six digit State of Alaska statistical reporting areas shown)
