Waha`ula Visitor Center being destroyed by lava, Kilauea Volcano
Photograph by J.D. Griggs on June 22, 1989
Lava sets fire to the once-popular Waha`ula Visitor Center and maintenance shop in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park as it completely covers the area with thin pahoehoe lava flows in 1989. Lava flowed again over this part of the south coast of Kilauea Volcano in August 1997, covering the sites of the former visitor center and a nearby ancient Hawaiian temple.
