Assignment Washington: U.S. Public and Private Schools

If you have school-age children, returning to the Washington, DC area after several years overseas requires some research into appropriate schooling options.  Some Foreign Service families already know the neighborhood and school district they prefer.  Some already own a home and are familiar with their local schools.  One thing is certain -- children go through educational growth spirts and schools change and evolve.  Finding the right school environment for your child is key to their academic and emotional growth.

Regardless of whether you are new to a Washington assignment or returning for a seond or third time, Family Liaison Office resources can help you through the transition.  FLO's Education Checklist for Returning to the Washington, DC Area may be useful as you approach move day.

Reentry to the U.S. after being abroad requires a readjustment period for young people, socially as well as academically. We encourage you to review FLO's Transition Issues and the Foreign Service Child on this website.  Here you will find information about the Foreign Service Youth Foundation, our publication According to My Passport I'm Coming Home, Third Culture Kids, and other helpful resources that provide insight into the adjustment process.

Expect the return home to have some good days and bad days, but the important thing to remember is that the FLO is standing by, ready to assist with the transition.   Click on the resources to the left for more information.  For additional assistance, contact the FLO Education and Youth Officer.
