Education and Youth

Families who raise their children in the Foreign Service face unique challenges -- frequent moves, changing cultures, transitions from one school to another, and a scarcity of educational facilities and services for special needs children. A priority for the Family Liaison Office is the educational and emotional development of children from mobile U.S. Foreign Service families.  FLO provides advice on appropriate schooling options, resources to make educated decisions, and support networks. In conjunction with other offices and Foreign Service organizations, FLO participates in programs and services for youth to assist them with issues of international mobility and reentry to the United States.

Foreign Service families can contact the FLO Education and Youth Officer for help and advice on education options at posts overseas, U.S. and international boarding schools, Washington area public and private schools, online education  (K - adult), the college admissions process, financial aid, standardized educational testing, children with special educational needs, and summer programs.   Families overseas can also visit their Community Liaision Office for assistance.

To gain an overview of education issues, read our publication Education Options for Foreign Service Family Members.  We also encourage you to visit the pages in this area of the FLO website.
