Biographical Sketch:

Kathryn Thomas is a plant ecologist and geographer based in Tucson, Arizona. She is originally from a northwest logging town and spent her childhood watching salmon run in the Umpqua and exploring the forest around her grandfather's 1910 board and batten cabin. Later, she realized that the world was not covered with Douglas fir and began a lifetime of exploring nature from deserts to chaparral to boreal forests.

Kathryn now conducts research on vegetation distribution and dynamics throughout the semi-arid and arid southwestern United States. She has a doctorate in geography (U.C. Santa Barbara), a masters in environmental horticulture (U.C. Davis), and has completed an integrated pest management curriculum (U.C. Berkeley). Her current projects include predictive modeling of species distributions under current and potential future climate conditions, development of a regional database of invasive plant distributions, vegetation mapping in the southwest including National Parks on the Colorado Plateau, and development of a restoration decision support tool. In her non-work life, Kathryn is involved with canine search and rescue and is taking natural history art classes.
