Small, reddish orange salamander reaching a maximum length of 4 inches. Tail is noticeably constricted at base. Tail can be voluntarily released when threatened by a predator. Four toes on each foot. Venter is white with distinct black markings. Individuals are terrestrial as adults and aquatic as larvae. Females locate nesting site while swimming around suitable areas. Females produce approximately 30 eggs and lay eggs in sphagnum moss located on logs, in log cavities, or in hammocks. Larvae drop from nest into water upon hatching. Communal nests are common. Species occurs in southeast Louisiana, in hilly hardwood forests with slow or still water or swamps.
