Hiram "Chip" Levy II

Senior Research Scientist at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory/NOAA

Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Geophysical Sciences and the Program in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Princeton University

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

My current research examines the impact of human activity on the chemistry of the atmosphere and its resulting impact on global air quality, climate, and global biogeochemical cycles. Some specific topics are: The influence of aerosols, both natural and anthropogenic, on air quality and climate; The interactions between air quality and climate policies; The impact of dust driven deposition of soluble iron on ocean biogeochemistry; The contribution of stratospheric ozone to tropospheric levels; The impact of human fixation of nitrogen on global nitrogen biogeochemistry.

RESEARCH PROGRAMS and COLLABORATIONS:

  1. Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry Group [GFDL] - Develop and employ computer models -- alongside a wide range of atmospheric chemical and meteorological measurements -- to advance our understanding of the earth's past, present, and future atmospheric climate and composition.

  2. CCSP [NOAA] Climate projections based on emission scenarios for long-lived and short-lived radiatively active gases and aerosols.

  3. ITCT [Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research/University of Iowa] - A coordinated international research program to investigate intercontinental transport of man-made pollution, with an emphasis on ozone, fine particles, and other chemically active "greenhouse" compounds.

COURSES:

  1. Chemistry of the Environment - CHM333/GEO333
  2. Atmospheric Chemistry and Transport - AOS/GEO537fall96
  3. Atmospheric Chemistry - fall1998, fall2000, spring2003 - AOS/GEO537fall98
