NIA policy on applications requesting more than $500,000

NIA adheres to the NIH policy stating that for applications with direct costs greater than $500,000 in any year, the principal investigator (PI) must contact NIA or another NIH Institute or Center staff 6 weeks prior to submission to determine whether the Institute will accept the application.

This policy applies to:

  •   Amended applications
  •   Competing renewals of grants
  •   New applications

NIA delegates approval to the program level for applications whose costs stay below $2 million in direct costs in each year of the proposed application. For applications requesting more than $2 million in direct costs a review of costs and benefits of the proposed work is conducted at the overall NIA level.

After NIA accepts an application requesting more than $500,000, the Institute may apply reductions according to NIA funding policy for the particular fiscal year of the award. In addition, large applications may be delayed in funding when insufficient funds are available at a particular funding cycle.
