This study has tremendous implications for individual and public health. In terms of individual health, it is a positive, encouraging sign that individuals can adapt a lifestyle with a heart-healthy, reduced caloric diet, and have flexibility with respect to protein, carbohydrate and fat content. With respect to public health, the strong message is that prevention works. We know that if we focus on diet, physical activity, we can really substantially lower our risk for heart disease, which is the number-one killer in this country. And, these preventive benefits can have an enormous impact on our personal health, public health in the country, and on health care costs in this country.
