A 19-year-old Harnett County, N.C., man drowned in an old gravel pit near his home off U.S. 421. The man was found after divers searched the pond for almost two hours. The victim and three other young people had been wading in the pond behind a mobile home park, according to authorities.

The pond, an old gravel pit, is deep in spots. He apparently was pulled under and disappeared. The others, an 18-year-old man and boys age 15 and 12, found a boat near the pond and used it to try to rescue their friend. (Source: Fayetteville Observer)
