A 41-year-old Virginia City, Nev., man died after diving into an abandoned mining pit filled with water, according to authorities. The victim dove off a 30-foot cliff into the Flowery Mine about four miles south of Virginia City in Six Mile Canyon, and failed to resurface after the mid-afternoon dive. Witnesses said he was trying to hit the water feet first, but apparently landed on his side. He never resurfaced. The man's body was recovered later in the evening. He had been with four other people in the restricted area on private property. (Source: Reno Gazette-Journal)
